The Staffordshire Bullterrier has never been a fighting dog, they originated from Old Bulldogs, Old English Terrier and Early Fighting Dog. These dogs were not a specific race, but a dog type, that when bred gave offspring called Bull and Terrier. They have, since then, changed markably in terms of looks and temperament to the type of dog that they are today.
The race standard for Staffordshire Bullterrier was set in 1932, and it was already then set as a requirement for the dogs to be available to people.
Because of their background, many unexperienced dog purchasers were warned for a high lust for fighting with other dogs - although it should also be said that this "lust" has never been stronger than with any other terrier, a terrier will always be a terrier.
The race standard concerning measurment and weight was set in 1964. It was then also desired that the Stafford would be even more social towards people as well as in relation to other dogs, than they already were.
